N. J. Akbar

N.J. Akbar is a double alum of EMU, graduating in 2007 with his Bachelor of Science in History and Language, Literature and Writing for Secondary Education and 2009 with his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership for Higher Education Student Affairs. While at EMU, he was Senator, Business and Finance Chair & Treasurer for Student Government, the 2006 Homecoming King, Chair of the EMU Creed Task Force responsible for writing the EMU Creed, became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. among many other things. Akbar was born and raised in Detroit, MI and is a graduate of Detroit Central High School.


Professionally, Akbar is the Director of Diversity Outreach and Development at Kent State University (Kent, OH) in the College of Education, Health and Human Services. In this role, he serves as the college’s diversity officer, leading diversity recruitment and retention efforts and working with faculty on diversity training and development efforts.
